Clarence Motter, "Light of the Night"

Clarence Motter, "Light of the Night"

Moon light backlighting clouds. Taken in Alta Sierra.

Robin Mayoff, "Night Driver"

Robin Mayoff, "Night Driver"

Nevada City near the bridge over the Yuba. Long exposure of the cars zooming between North San Juan and Nevada City.

Don Hicks, "South Fork Yuba 2019"

Don Hicks, "South Fork Yuba 2019"

South Fork Yuba. A perfect place to capture the ever flowing passage of time and water by utilizing studio lighting techniques. The surreal shapes of granite, bent and shaped by years of flowing water, when lit from above reveals within shadow and light new compositions undreamed of.

Allison Kalt, "Bridging the Cosmos"

Allison Kalt, "Bridging the Cosmos"

I've worked as a commercial photographer based out of Nevada County for five years. Photographing under the stars allows me to feel more grounded in myself, and connected to the land I inhabit by witnessing the landscape in a new light. This shot was captured at Hoyt's Crossing in April 2024.

Robin Mayoff, "Night at the Fair"

Robin Mayoff, "Night at the Fair"

Long exposure image of the County Fair.

Ellen Davis, "Aurora Over Scott's Flat Lake"

Ellen Davis, "Aurora Over Scott's Flat Lake"

The Aurora Borealis had a spectacular display over the Northern Hemisphere in early May. I went to Scott's Flat Lake to photograph them because of the clear view and reflective qualities of the water.

Robin Mayoff, "Shell at Bridgeport"

Robin Mayoff, "Shell at Bridgeport"

Long exposure with light painting of the old Shell station.

Kial James, "In Your Dreams"

Kial James, "In Your Dreams"

The Neowise Comet dazzles over Hirschman Pond, accompanied by a streaking shooting star and the blurred lights of a passing car, all under a breathtaking dark night sky.

Allison Kalt, "Lighting the Way"

Photographing under the stars allows me to feel more grounded in myself, and connected to the land I inhabit by witnessing the landscape in a new light. This shot of Comet NEOWISE was captured at Hirschman's Pond in July 2020.

Dave Weixelman, "South Fork Yuba River"

Dave Weixelman, "South Fork Yuba River"

Taken on May 29, 2024 from the old bridge on HWY 49 looking upstream. Three photos were taken on the same evening from the same location and direction on the bridge and blended. Canon Ra camera and Sigma 20mm f1.4 lens.

Don Hicks, "Faucherie Small Island 2019"

Don Hicks, "Faucherie Small Island 2019"

Faucherie Lake, a small island nestled within the lake. The idea of these works is to light a landscape in the darkness of night by utilizing studio lighting techniques, revealing all at once the passing of time and the solitude of landscape subjects within their natural surroundings.

Kial James, "Emerald Gold"

Kial James, "Emerald Gold"

Showcasing the beauty of the Yuba under the stars and below the water.

Dave Weixelman, "Loney Meadow"

Dave Weixelman, "Loney Meadow"

Kial James, "Lakeside with the Northern Lights"

Lake of the Pines, under the clear, open skies of Nevada County, provided the perfect backdrop for the shimmering, once-in-a-lifetime spectacle of the Northern Lights in Northern California.

Nevada County Arts Council acknowledges that the original inhabitants of territories now known as Nevada County continue to be home to indigenous peoples. Generations of Washoe and Nisenan tribal communities, east and west, shared boundaries with Maidu peoples and developed deep understandings of these lands. Through ceremony, culture and stewardship our indigenous peoples continue long standing relationships with the land, as well as with water, air, plant and animal beings. We are committed to understanding that the voices of our indigenous communities are primary voices, and to supporting their leadership towards a more just future for everyone.

Nevada County Arts Council, by resolution of Nevada County Board of Supervisors, is State-Local Partner with California Arts Council. As such, we facilitate collaborative efforts that promote and sustain the visual, literary and performing arts of Nevada County in order to advance the cultural, social and economic life of our community. We are a 501c3 not-for-profit organization and your contributions are tax-deductible by law. Our Employment Identification Number (EIN) is 27-0314493.
